Mastectomy Pillows Buying Guide
Different Types of Mastectomy Pillows
You would think that a pillow is a pillow is a pillow! Yet, when it comes to breast cancer and post mastectomy pillow options, there are a few. Some people won’t need or bother with one at all. However, for those who do find a certain type of pillow provides support and protection for ‘sore bits’, they are a heaven-sent blessing.
There are several different post mastectomy pillow designs. However, they’ll largely boil down to four main shapes. One of the types is specifically designed for use with seat belts. So we’ll consider mastectomy seat belt pillow options (link to that article) in another article. In this article we focus on mastectomy pillows options that are most useful for hospital, going home, reclining and sleeping. It may be the case that one of these will suit you for use in the car, also. Keep that in mind.
A common design of mastectomy pillow you’ll see is a rather substantial pillow with two cutouts to rest your arms in. A second style is rather smaller and simpler and can still be propped under an arm, or under a breast. A third type is really a simple, standard square pillow, but has features that make it more versatile than your loungeroom throw cushion!
These descriptions all sound rather vague and confusing, I hear you, so let’s look in a little more detail and I’ll explain.
What to Consider When Buying a Mastectomy Pillow
Before you purchase a mastectomy pillow, there are some aspects worth considering:
The Most Suitable Size of Post Mastectomy Pillow
A very popular design of post mastectomy pillow on the market as of January 2022 is quite a sizeable item. It rivals a standard bed pillow for size and shape. So, if you’re sitting at home after your hospital stay, and taking time out to recover, this size may suit. However, if you wish to take this particular design – say – in the car with you, it’s considerably bulkier than other designs. The last thing we want when we’re trying to move carefully and slowly is to be wrestling with an ungainly item – even if it is soft and cuddly!
As such, I recommend thinking through how you’re likely to use the mastectomy pillow, and whether a smaller design may be more versatile for your needs. It’s easier said than done if you’re considering your purchase prior to surgery and you don’t have any idea what to expect. That’s precisely why the reviews we provide on these pages are valuable for you. We’ve done all the hard work, so you don’t have to.
Consider the Versatility of the Product
I’m not sure about you, but I’m starting to get buried in a pile of ‘stuff’ and ‘clutter’ in my household! We seem to accumulate so many belongings these days and they take over our living space. So, when I think of an item I need and that is going to come into my house, I need to visualize where its going to live. Is it going to have a home? Somewhere I can put it when it’s not in use. Or, is it going to perch somewhere, get in the way, and start to frustrate me?
So, back to the mastectomy pillow. Because they come in different shapes and sizes, and it’s possible to purchase a different pillow for different purposes (e.g. mastectomy seat belt pillow, which we talk about more over HERE (link)), it’s worth considering whether one may suit both purposes.
How Easily Washable the Mastectomy Pillow is
Chances are there will be lots of rest and relaxation whilst recovering from surgery. Recuperating likely won’t involve much stress, strain, sweat and grubbiness! I mean, you’re not going to be out in the garden getting grubby and using your post mastectomy pillow! (Or, are you?) So it’s not likely to get dirty in the sense that our day clothes get dirty. However, immediately after surgery we have drains and dressings and wounds and the potential for spills that might go along with that. So, being able to wash and easily dry a mastectomy pillow is a requirement. Will it be possible to wash and dry one quickly? Or, would it be better to have two – one in use, one in the wash? All food for thought and planning ahead of purchase time.
Disposal or Re-Use of Your Post Mastectomy Pillow
Mastectomy pillows that are highly specific and specialized in shape aren’t likely to be very useful for anything once you’re fully recovered. Even though it may seem that recovery and discomfort will go on forever, normal life will resume. Well, a new normal life, that is! With adjustments and acceptance. Consequently, a weirdly shaped post mastectomy pillow may not be useful for anything else once you’re back to your normal self. So give some thought about what you’ll do with it. None of us want any extra clutter in our lives. So, a bit of thought about what to do with your post mastectomy pillow when you no longer need it may save some dilemma or frustration down the track.
Manufacturer and Raw Material Details
Not everyone will take into consideration where the manufacturer is located, the practices they employ and where they get their raw materials from. However, just as it’s a great idea to consider what happens to your purchase when you’re done with it, it’s good to be mindful about where it’s come from! In the interests of fair trade practices and decency for all, I endeavor to always be across this type of information, as far as possible.
Why do I Need a Mastectomy Pillow?
Any type of breast surgery is a big deal, and especially so when mastectomy is involved. Recovery takes quite a while and it can take a very long time to feel comfortable with the changes. So, anything that eases pressure, relieves pain and provides comfort is a good thing. Sometimes called a breast cancer pillow, post mastectomy pillows are designed to help women recover from surgery.
You might think you can use a standard bed pillow, or a throw cushion – and, potentially you can! And, if you’re trying to stick to a tight budget, I’d recommend starting with that approach. But, when you see the benefits of a cleverly designed mastectomy pillow, you may change your mind. Perhaps you could request one of these as a gift if you have someone wanting to spoil you? They make thoughtful and useful gifts, that’s for sure.
Where it hurts…
Whichever design of mastectomy pillow is considered, they generally aim to serve a number of purposes, including:
If auxiliary lymph nodes have been removed from under an arm, the healing wound will be tender. Having a neat little cushion that props your arm out away from your body so the arm is not resting on the surgery site removes unhelpful pressure.
Similarly, having a cosy and plump cushion to rest your arms on, whilst they’re still in a fairly natural position, help you rest your arms and muscles but takes pressure off the surgery area.
Driving in a car requires a seat belt to be in place – across the chest. The last thing we need after double mastectomy, breast reconstruction, or any other type of breast surgery, is a seatbelt directly across the chest! Here’s where a small pillow providing a cushioning buffer between your chest and the seat belt comes into its own.
Whilst a standard bed pillow or throw cushion can be used for propping you up in bed or on a chair or lounge, here’s an additional use for the post mastectomy pillow, if needed.
Getting back to the old you sooner…
Essentially, any way a cleverly designed post-surgery pillow can be used to provide comfort and relieve pressure from surgery sites will enable faster and better healing.
How to Use a Mastectomy Pillow
Once you’re through surgery, whether it be a lumpectomy (link) or mastectomy – whether unilateral or bilateral – you’ll instinctively know where is tender and where you want support! However, generally women use a post mastectomy in the following way:
Armpit Comfort
In the process of diagnosing breast cancer, a lumpectomy and removal of some lymph nodes may be carried out. Removal of lymph nodes under the arm pit will leave the whole region tender and with a decent sized (generally) incision and stitches. The area may experience swelling and soreness until it fully heals, which may take several weeks. The last thing we want to do is have our arm hanging down and putting pressure on this armpit region. This is where a small pillow can be propped under the arm to hold it away from the body a little. So, it’s not necessarily a mastectomy pillow at this stage – just a small pillow! But the same small pillow will still come in handy. Should you be advised to go to the next stage and undergo further surgery you can use it again.
Breast Support
After a lumpectomy the breast may be sporting an incision and need to recover. Depending upon where the incision is made to access the breast lump being excised, and the weight of the breast, discomfort may vary for the individual. In my case, my lumpectomy took a lump higher up in my chest wall – not in the actual breast itself. Not being a large breasted woman, I did not experience great discomfort after this procedure. However, this is not the most common scenario. Consequently, popping a suitably sized and shaped breast cancer pillow under the breast to support the weight of it may relieve the surgery region and provide comfort and greater ease of recovery.
Side Sleeping After Mastectomy
Initially you won’t want to sleep anywhere or in any way that puts pressure on your breasts or chest (or underarms) in any way! Back sleeping is likely to be advised initially and that’s all you’ll be able to bear to do! However, eventually you may venture back to side sleeping. (It took me a very long time to even consider trying lying on my front!) Again, depending upon the size and tenderness of your breasts, if you’ve had a reconstruction, a mastectomy pillow for sleeping may help. A small pillow formed into a rectangular shape can be positioned against the chest, between the breasts to provide support. Anything that provides comfort and ease at this stage is a good thing!
Extra Pillows or Wedge Pillows for back sleeping
As you can imagine, back sleeping will be what the doctor orders after breast surgery. Of course, always check with your doctor and medical team for your personalised instructions for your recovery. In hospital with those motorised hospital beds that bends and leans and rises and falls, you’ll likely have all the manouverability needed to get comfortable and remain sufficiently upright for sleeping comfortably. (My sons loved the hospital beds! I think they may have worn a couple out!) In addition, because chest muscles play a part in us being able to sit up, rising from lying down is not good when you’ve had breast surgery. Or, any other type of chest surgery, I imagine! So being able to elevate yourself with the hospital bed to get up is easy.
However, once you get home, or if you go home early on in your post surgery period, you may not have these contraptions! This is where a larger wedge pillow may come in handy for reclining on. However, some additional standard pillows, or European pillows may fit the bill without having to go to specialised items.
Seat Belt Comfort
If you’re a small framed person and also don’t have a great deal of bulk or breast in your central chest area, you may not feel the need for a post mastectomy seat belt pillow. However, if the seat belt is likely to press on your chest area or reconstructed breasts area, you may benefit from having some padding under where the seat belt passes over your upper body. Specialised mastectomy seat belt cover options are available, which we’ll look at over HERE (link). However, in the interests of minimizing, a small mastectomy pillow may double to serve this purpose also. See what you think once you’ve read the reviews, below.
Best Mastectomy Pillow Reviews
1. Renova Medical Wear Store Mastectomy Pillow
Our Verdict
Can’t find much to not love about this product! Suits the purpose most purchasers obtain it for, easily washable, versatile enough to be used in hospital, in the car, at home. Nice, soft fabric, easily washed and quality appears to be better than average. And the price is well affordable. Suitable for a gift and for purchasing for one’s own purposes.
Pros
- We love a choice of three strong colors for this mastectomy pillow. Black, gray and a vibrant pink are available. Nothing fussy, cluttered, clashing or gaudy! We’re on the conservative side ????
- Hurrah! Someone has designed a cover that can be removed from the filling/insert to be washed. And, at a price that is not too much more than those lacking this feature.
- A zipper goes all the way along the bottom of this pillow, making removal, insertion and adjustment of the filling straightforward.
- A handy little pocket for carrying a phone and lip balm etc sits on the middle of the front side.
- This pillow has been on the market for a couple of years and has a significant number of glowing reviews – 93% of 1200+ buyers gave a 4 or 5 star rating with a number of users posting photos of themselves using it.
- Pleasingly, the company that markets this product specializes in products to assist people after surgery. They have a dedicated website describing what they do and they are based in the US (New Jersey). Products are made in China, and that is completely usual for a budget priced item. So, yes, they are in this product niche to make a profit, but they have chosen a purpose and an audience to serve and specialize in that area. Other sellers can tend to go for whatever variety and diversity of products they can to make a profit, whether they have their heart in the niche, or not. Not everyone will give a hoot about this factor, but for those that do, they will be well pleased with the integrity of the organization they give their business to.
Renova state:
“PRODUCTS MADE BETTER: we listen to customer feedback and fine-tune every detail to ensure quality, fit, and comfort. If you’re not completely satisfied at any time, for any reason, we will give you a full refund. Visit Your Orders to get started.”
That’s what we like! Excellent products created with the customer satisfaction in mind.
Cons
- Alas, this mastectomy pillow stops short of including pockets on the flipside of the front (containing the cell phone pocket…) for Cold/Hot packs to be slipped into.
- A couple of users reported issues with a poor quality zipper – disappointing but really on par with a product produced and sold at a very relatively low price. That seems to be how it goes ‘these days’. Fortunately, the brand/seller promotes a money back guarantee to keep customers happy.
- A method for securing the pillow to the body would increase versatility, however this didn’t detract from the delight many users expressed about the benefits of this particular pillow.
2. Rainbowstar Mastectomy Pillow for Front and Underarm Coverage
Our Verdict
For a very affordable purchase price, this is a useful, versatile and popular mastectomy pillow. It’s versatile enough to be used immediately after surgery. It is popular for use as a seat belt buffer and also at home for the whole recovery period. A good buy.
Pros
- This is a sizeable pillow (35” in length, 12” wide and 2” thick) which provides good coverage across the body and under the arms to prop the arms away from the body. It weighs less than 15ounces and is not overstuffed, so not too bulky.
- Available in three bright, happy colors – Sunflower, Cobalt Blue, Rose Ribbon and Tiny Flower.
- Having a pocket on the side for a phone (if facing outwards) or a cold pack (if facing inwards) is popular with some users.
- Having loose fill which inserts into the pillow via a zipper on the end means the cover can not be easily removed to be washed. Unless, of course, the fill is washed with the cushion.
- Similar to the William & Flow Mastectomy Pillow, this one has a zipper at one end which accesses the filling directly. Some reported washing the multiple times with good results. So, evidently the pillow washes ‘wholus bolus’ quite well and can be plumped up whilst drying.
- Over 90% of customers who provided a review on the product gave it 4 or 5 stars (which equates to 4.7 out of 5 from 531 reviews) on Amazon.
- It appears this brand offers a line of medical assistance products to help people through surgery recovery. We like that they appear to have put some thought into helpful items in lightweight and cheerful colours.
Cons
- Whilst a couple of low-star reviews said too-big and too-small, by far the bulk of users were really pleased with this pillow. A report of stitching coming undone, and one report of the pillow ripping were observed, but with 91% of reviews giving 4 and 5 stars, these 1 and 2 star reports are the out-lyers.
- There is no option for a tie, strap or way to secure the cushion to the body, which is a handy feature to have. Straining to ‘tuck’ something where you need it when shifting positions is not a favourable manouver to have to do, especially immediately after surgery. An method for securing the pillow to the body would increase versatility.
- Similar to the William & Flo Mastectomy pillow, some users wanted a pocket on both sides (inside and outside) of the pillow, so a phone, spectacles and personal items could be put on the outside and cold packs put on the inside.
- The three bright, happy colors aren’t subtle in any way! For those who prefer more understated medical recovery items, there’s no ‘vanilla’ (neutral!) choice of color.
- Like other pillows reviewed, the pillow does not have a removable, washable cover.
3. Homezone Center Mastectomy Pillow
Our Verdict
For our money – if I was going for major breast surgery (heaven forbid – once is enough) – this would be the product I’d choose. The extra expense is minimal in the scheme of things when you stack up the features of this mastectomy pillow. It’s got pretty much everything we said we wanted whilst reviewing all the others. We love the color (sorry if you don’t)! Perhaps they’ll expand the color range in coming months.
Pros
- On paper, this mastectomy pillow ticks most of our boxes! First of all, we love the color!
- Front pocket for phone, spectacles, lip balm – convenience people love.
- Inside pockets – and they’re amply sized – for hot/cold packs to aid recovery.
- A strap to assist with holding the pillow in place – and instructions to suggest that the strap can go around the neck, as well a straight around the back. We don’t have first hand information on this strap, but it appears to be different from the ‘luggage strap’ type of arrangement we’ve been critical of on other products in this review.
- A zipper allows the user to access a removable insert so the cover can be washed. Brilliant. How hard is that?
- The source we consulted had only 19 reviews of this product as at January 2022 with an overall rating of 4.2 of 5. 85% of people reviewing this product gave it a 4 or 5 star rating, which is just fine. But for us, with the features we’ve observed and the great reviews we’ve seen, we anticipated more. So, we’re investigating a bit further.
Cons
- You can have this pillow in any color you like, so long as it is coral peach!
- A little bit dismayed to see that the seller also sells a hardware item in his range – when the marketing for the mastectomy pillow would indicate a singular and heartfelt focus on medical products for recovery from debilitating illness and/or serious surgery. Seller is based in US (Massachusetts) with a product made in China, which is all just fine.
- We’d like to see more sales and customer reviews on this product.
- This mastectomy pillow has a significantly higher price point than all comparable others we’ve found and reviewed.
4. MYOAMA New Design Mastectomy Pillow
Our Verdict
At first glance we got pretty excited at the potential of this mastectomy pillow choice as it has additional features and is on it’s second version (at least) of the design. However, it lacks a couple of features we favored in other designs (zipper accessing removable insert and cotton exterior fabric) and we would have liked to see a softer, gentler design method for the straps (similar to what is used for swimwear and underwear straps, rather than luggage straps!) For the added cost to purchase, we’re questioning whether it’s worth the added investment.
Pros
- This mastectomy pillow has close to everything and this particular model is a newer, revised model of a well rated earlier version.
- We love the pocket for hot/cold packs or drain bags on one side AND a pocket in front for phone/specs/lip balm.
- AND a well secured one-click strap for each arm for attachment of the pillow to the body.
- Soft, comfortable, durable cover which comes in three appealing colors.
- The MOYOAMA brand appears to focus on mastectomy pillows and heart and hysterectomy surgery cushions. You may recall that we like this approach – the approach where the brand/seller has a focus and a purpose to assist those having undergone specific surgeries.
- The information available about the company is that it is based out of the Netherlands and has had 100% positive feedback out of 40 sales over 12 months. That’s a satisfying record.
- On this particular design iteration the ratings are 4.9 out of 5 stars over 14 ratings. On the previous version of the product over 92% of ratings (out of 800+) gave a 4 or 5 star score. Definitely pretty well liked.
Cons
- This pillow is 100% polyester, whereas the previous model is 100% cotton. We’ve put this a a downside, as cotton being a natural material may be preferable to some. However, polyester is soft, wearable and washable.
- Recommendation is for hand washing, but no information is available on whether the cover is removable. So, it is assumed it is not. This isn’t favorable for an item that is recommended for use as a fairly ‘intimate’ item over an extended period.
- The straps are a better design method than delicate ribbons stitched in, and don’t necessarily have to be used. However, the webbing and plastic click connector aren’t something we associate with softness against the skin, nor flexibility. Perhaps these straps and connectors being made out of the same materials as bra or swimwear straps and connectors would be more appealing.
- This mastectomy pillow is a little more pricey than other comparable ones. Given it has added features such as inside pockets and quality, robust arm straps, this could be justified. However, we’re not huge fans of the arm strap materials & connectors, so don’t see this as a feature worth paying almost 25% more than other similar items for.
5. William & Flo Mastectomy Pillow
Our Verdict
This is a really pretty pillow, with a lovely sentiment. It’s probably great for a gift, if you don’t know whether it will be rigorously used, or not. However, it seems a little ‘light on’ in the ‘good design’ category. So I’d be looking elsewhere if I were choosing a breast cancer pillow like this for my personal use.
Pros
-
- The fabric colors of this mastectomy pillow are bright and gorgeous – very cheerful. The pillow also features a removable tag with the message ‘You are loved’. A beautiful sentiment, especially if this item is a gift.
- This is a sizeable pillow. The entire pillow is 34”, the width of center section is 14” and the underarm’s gap is 6.2″. It weighs less than 14ounces and is not cumbersome.
- A pocket on one side for a phone (if facing outwards) or a cold pack (if facing inwards) is popular with some users.
- A zipper provided at one end allows the filling to be removed (or readjusted to suit the user, which is the main purpose of providing the zipper according the brand). This makes the pillow washable, if you don’t mind removing, storing and replacing loose filling. The zipper also allows for extra filling of the pillow – although this seems bothersome to have to do.
- Over 90% of customers who provided a review on the product gave it 4 or 5 stars. (This equates to 4.6 out of 5 from 159 reviews) on Amazon. This product has only been available on Amazon since late 2021.
Cons
- Having loose fill which inserts into the pillow via a zipper on one end means the cover can not be easily removed to be washed. Unless, of course, the fill is washed with the cushion. This is possible but it’s hard to predict if it will bounce back after a wash or two.
- Some users wanted a pocket on both sides (inside and outside) of the pillow, so a phone, spectacles and personal items could be put on the outside and cold packs put on the inside.
- The amount of plumpness of the cushion, particularly in the under arm area, is on the low side. For something pretty and squishy to cuddle, it meets the requirement of some users. However, for those wanting true support of the arms, more filling is required.
- There is no option for a tie, strap or way to secure the cushion to the body, which is a handy option. Straining to ‘tuck’ something where you need it when shifting positions is not a favourable option, especially immediately after surgery.
Company Information
- The seller brand appears to be an Australian company (Pty Ltd) based in Victoria, Australia. The product is FBA (fulfilled by Amazon). That means the product has been chosen by people who have entered the market to build an Amazon business. The goal is to choose a product they believe they can make a good profit from and do better than the competition on. There is nothing fundamentally wrong with this approach. Perhaps they have designed the product (to be better), sighted and inspected the product first hand and likely someone with breast cancer/surgery could have tested it out for them. However, this is a recent business (selling since late 2021) and the product might still be in development/improvement phase. It is assumed that the reviews are genuine. I say this because Amazon has been ‘cracking down’ on review incentivization practices employed by Amazon Sellers using FBA. However, I’m a little suspicious of how genuine some of the early review are. I have closely considered becoming an Amazon FBA seller myself. I am also close friends with some very successful sellers on the platform. Hence, I’m familiar with many of the strategies employed to succeed on the platform!
6. Rainbowstar Breast Cancer Bow Mastectomy Pillow
Our Verdict
The luxurious look of the fabric and elegant colors of this mastectomy pillow appeals to us. However, there don’t seem to be any features or enhanced standard factors that warrant the higher purchase price. Quality seems to be variable. Unless you really prefer this fabric and color choice over other options, you could save a few dollars and go for a different product.
Pros
- The colour choices are pleasing with this mastectomy pillow. The blue and the pink options are less flamboyant than the highly patterned options provided by other products. They just seem ‘calmer’ options, whilst still being attractive colors and soft and cosy looking fabric.
- The addition of the back tie (ribbon on either end) is a helpful feature. Those who wish to secure the cushion for support while moving around, or just re-adjusting their seated position will appreciate it.
- This is a sizeable pillow (35” in length, 12” wide and 2” thick) which provides good coverage across the body and under the arms to prop the arms away from the body. It weighs less than 15ounces and is not overstuffed, so not too bulky.
- Just on 80% of customers who provided a review on the product gave it 4 or 5 stars (which equates to 4.2 out of 5 from 91 reviews) on Amazon.
Cons
- Pockets on the inside of the pillow, so cold or heat packs could be put alongside the body, would be a more useful feature than a pocket for a mobile phone, in our opinion!
- Reports from users are quite varied. So, we’re left wondering whether quality control is an issue. Perhaps the products being sent out are varying in production standard and – in particular – in amount of filling in the pillow.
- The strings for tying the pillow to secure it around the body are a helpful feature. However, if not tied, we figure two loose, dangling bits of ribbon would be a nuisance. They’ll likely get caught, possibly fray, or dislodge.
- This mastectomy pillow has a higher price than other comparable ones. We don’t think the quality, features and feedback from users justify the higher price. Perhaps the product price is driven by the fabric, if it’s a higher priced raw material.
- We personally aren’t in favor of the ‘breast cancer bow’ featured on the front of the pillow. This is an individual choice – who needs to wear ‘the bow’ as though it’s a badge of honor? However, if some breast cancer patients find the symbolism comforting and supportive, then that is a good thing.
7. Rainbowstar Mastectomy Pillow for Armpit
Our Verdict
If you want to try an affordable, versatile, convenient sized mastectomy pillow that serves you well for a few weeks during recovery from a lumpectomy and/or unilateral mastectomy, this is an ideal purchase for you.
Pros
- This is a nicely sized (12” x 12”) and versatile mastectomy pillow. Easy to wear around, fit in the car and carry in a carry bag, it’s not too bulky or overwhelming. It’s versatility is a real plus. Why buy a separate mastectomy seat belt pillow and additional pillow for other occasions, when this one will suit both requirements. You’ll save on dollars, space, hassle and disposal/after-use issues.
- The string tie at the top means it’s easy to wear this mastectomy pillow whilst moving around, without it falling off.
- The string tie is adjustable so the pillow can be positioned or worn at a suitable height, which might vary depending on the stage of your recovery.
- The curve of this pillow could be tucked under the breast to support and remove strain on surgery sites in the early days after a lumpectomy.
- Over 80% of customers who provided a review on the product gave it 4 or 5 stars (which equates to 4.4 out of 5 from 201 reviews) on Amazon. In the past 12 months to January 2022, their feedback has been excellent.
- Available in three bright, happy colors – Sunflower, Cobalt Blue and Rose Ribbon
Cons
- The feedback we reviewed from several customers indicated that the ribbons frayed and/or came loose and separated from the pillow. It’s not an expensive product, but this poor standard of workmanship is disappointing for a simply constructed item.
- This is an excellent product to use following a lumpectomy and lymph node removal and for seat belt protection. However, if someone is after a breast cancer pillow that covers their entire torso and fits beneath both arms – this product does not suit that requirement.
- The three bright, happy colors aren’t very discreet! And the mastectomy pillow won’t really double for anything else in your home décor after you no longer need it for recovery.
- The heart shape is a little ‘weird’ to my mind. It won’t be stable to sit on a surface and may prevent the pillow from settling nicely under the arm whilst in a seated position. There may be a benefit (a ‘Pro’) on the flipside of this criticism, but we haven’t come up with it, yet.
- The pillow does not have a washable cover. It’s wash the whole thing, or don’t wash it at all.
- The 1-stars largely expressed disappointment based on poor quality of fabric and construction.
Company Information
- Information about the company selling this product (Rainbowstar) is non-existent. All we could ascertain about them is they’re from Beijing, China, have traded since 2016 and also trade under two other brands (vomvomp & minihut) which sell products unrelated to healthcare. However, Rainbowstar appears to sell a range of healthcare related products, so healthcare is somewhat of a specialty. And, there’s nothing essentially wrong with that. However, for anyone wanting to know about fair trade issues before purchasing, or feel that their plight is close to the heart of the seller, those conscientious consumers may not be satisfied with the lack of information available.
8. BESLKB Mastectomy Pillow
Our Verdict
We’re struggling a bit with this one. On the face of it, the product has some good features – strap, pocket, supposedly washable. However we feel it falls short of being well-thought-out. The average reviews would suggest that this assessment might be warranted. However, for a lower purchase, price it might make a thoughtful gift if you’re not sure if it’ll be well used. For a personal purchase, we probably wouldn’t choose this one.
Pros
- The design offers an alternative fabric design. We don’t mind this pattern and color.
- Straps provided for holding the pillow around the body – to a certain extent. The straps will assist in a seated position to prevent the underarms/wings from “flapping”.
- What we do appreciate about these straps – over delicate ribbon straps, for example – is even if they’re not done up, and they’re left undone, it will be very definite where they are. That is, they’ll be easy to locate, move aside or out of the way. This is in contrast to silky ribbons which we can imagine digging around, trying to find, when you’re likely sitting on them and are unable to work out why you can’t move the pillow! Bottom line – a bit more realistic and practical than ribbons.
- This design is a lower price point and could be utilized for car travel as well as in hospital immediately after surgery and later for at home recovery. A low cost item, so low risk to try. A possible good option for a gift if you’re unsure if it will be well used, or not.
- The seller has had 100% positive reviews out of 18 reviews over the past 12 months. However, this isn’t a great number and there’s no way of knowing if the results have been manipulated. 81% of 32 reviewers (over the selling lifetime of the product) gave a 4 or 5 star. Overall, with low numbers of reviews, we score this as an ‘average’ result.
Cons
- Any straps provided really need to loop over the arms to be of any great use. The straps provided are similar to the type used on luggage and don’t conjure up images of comfort and softness. We’d prefer to see the straps design option be based on the type utilized in swimwear and bras. These would still be firm and secure, yet softer and with rounded edges.
- Great to have a pocket, but a centre front pocket is of limited use for heat/cold packs. If lymph nodes have been removed the temperature application needs to be under the arm area (after checking with the doctor and medical team first, of course).
- We’d like to see more detail about construction, materials used and washing instructions in the listing information provided.
- The Chinese brand/seller does offer a couple of post surgery recovery items, but also offers a ‘witchcraft’ herb kit, so one wonders how much dedicated product support, development and research goes into customer needs for product improvement for the mastectomy pillow.
9. Rainbowstar Underarm (with pocket) Mastectomy Pillow
Our Verdict
We prefer this over the similar Rainbowstar ‘single’ mastectomy pillow, since it has what we think is a more useful shape. Furthermore, it has a pocket for a hot/cold pack (not included) and is at a similar price. Easy to wear around, fit in the car and carry in a carry bag, it’s not too bulky or overwhelming. It’s versatility is a real plus. This mastectomy pillow will suit both requirements, so there’ll be no need to buy a separate mastectomy seat belt pillow and additional pillow for other occasions. Great for saving on dollars, space and disposal/after-use hassle.
Pros
- This is a nicely sized (13” x 8.3” x 3.5”) and versatile mastectomy pillow weighing less than 0.4 pounds.
- A handy string tie at the top makes it easy move around whilst wearing the pillow, without it falling off.
- An advantage of the ribbon tie is that it is adjustable so the pillow can be positioned or worn at a suitable height, which might vary depending on the stage of the patient’s recovery.
- The curve of this pillow could be tucked under the breast to support and remove strain on surgery sites in the early days after a lumpectomy. However, it appears that the pillow is primarily designed for use after lumpectomy and lymph node removal.
- A great feature of this particular pillow is the pocket into which a cold/heat pack can be placed. The Hot/Cold Pack is not included. The pocket has a Velcro strip to hold it closed, which is a great and simple idea.
- Almost 90% of customers who provided a review on the product gave it 4 or 5 stars (which equates to 4.5 out of 5 from 98 reviews) on Amazon.
- Users have reported washing and drying this cushion successfully.
- An affordable price so great for those on a budget, or for a gift if you’re unsure how much it’ll be used.
Cons
- This mastectomy pillow only has one color choice. Not so good if you like color choices, as I do!
- There have been some reports of poor standards (unsewn seams, too little stuffing), but many more reports of good quality and satisfaction with the product. It’s always concerning when reports of quality issues arise at the same time as good reports, as it points to a quality control issue – and who’s got time for that?
- As for other pillows reviewed, this one does not have a removable, washable cover. The product information says machine wash, so hopefully it’s robust enough to go through the washing machine a few times and hold together.

Mastectomy Pillow FAQs
What are the benefits of a breast cancer pillow?
A mastectomy pillow serves to ease pressure on surgery sites by supporting the arms slightly away from the body. The use of a well-designed pillow for after breast surgery can provide comfort and relief for the patient. Anything that supports the patient mentally and emotionally, as well as physically, after surgery has considerable benefits for speedy and full recovery.
How is a breast cancer pillow used?
Generally, a mastectomy pillow is used to help reduce the pain following lymph node surgery and lumpectomy or mastectomy. Placing a well-designed pillow for after breast surgery between the arm and chest can support the arm. This serves to prevent the healing skin and surgery area from ‘pulling’ and putting pressure on the incisions.
What are the disadvantages of using a breast cancer pillow?
It’s advisable to check with your doctor and medical professionals team to ensure that there will be no disadvantage to your recovery if you use a pillow for after breast surgery. Some pillows for mastectomy patients have pockets for hot/cold packs. Be sure that the use of hot/cold packs is suitable for your situation before using them.
You may get by without a specialist pillow, and so save costs. They are somewhat bulky, take up space, won’t really have an application after you have fully recovered. If you get frustrated by having extra ‘stuff’ around and getting in your way, you might prefer to ‘make do’ with a spare standard bed pillow, or rolled up towel or small blanket.
How much does a breast cancer pillow cost?
Prices vary, but they are relatively low cost, with all we reviews being less than $USD40.
Wrapping Up Our Mastectomy Pillow Guide
Stating that one particular style over another particular style is going to be a bit narrow-minded, as each person will have a different perspective on what’s going to suit them. In addition, there are different types of surgery with varying amounts of impact on the patient. So, the end purpose for a mastectomy pillow can be different from person to person. Keep this in mind when you’re using our reviews and ratings to choose!
Consider the main purpose…
If you want a breast cancer pillow for a gift, or for yourself you may choose differently. Should you be on a limited budget and want your purchase to suit multiple applications (hospital, home, car) you may like our Best Value option. In the case that you anticipate spending a long time in hospital, the Premium Choice may work well for you. Our Top Rated option is a good all round choice, balancing purchase price, good standard of manufacture and features.
Look out for…
After collating the feedback from a large number of reviews of a good number of breast cancer pillows, two common observations were that:
- manufacturing quality can be variable and
- an overall tendency is that the pillows are often not ‘fluffy’ enough – too little filling.
One observation worthy of noting is that all of these mastectomy pillows are designed for a ‘typical’ or ‘average’ sized woman. Larger women tend to have trouble with these pillows as they are a ‘one-size-fits-all’ so keep this in mind if you’re a curvy lady.
So, when you think you know which one is best for you, just check over those items again to ensure you’re super happy with your purchase when it arrives! We wish you the very best outcome from your surgery.
